What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that affects the production of insulin in the pancreas.  Insulin is necessary to regulate the body’s blood sugar levels, and those who suffer from diabetes often experience sudden blood sugar spikes and drops.  There are two main form of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.  Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in children and is a lifelong condition.  Type 2 diabetes is a condition developed later in life and is the more common form of the disease.

What can I do this month?

During American Diabetes Month, take a vested interest in your health and learn about the different risk factors that you face.  Making healthy lifestyle choices like eating well and exercising regularly are just some of the ways that you can reduce your risk for diabetes.  Additionally, this month you should also schedule a check-up with your doctor.  Make sure you get a blood test to find out if you are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.  Many Americans are pre-diabetic or already have diabetes and don’t even know it.  So, this month, put your health first.

You can get involved this month by supporting diabetes organizations and legitimate research foundations.  Donate to these organizations or show your support by attending local fundraisers and events.  Additionally, you can get involved by encouraging your friends and family to learn more about diabetes.  Either way, there are countless ways for you to join the fight against diabetes.
