The Dangers of Winter Driving

The Dangers of Winter DrivingThe winter is a visually beautiful season, but it may be the most dangerous when it comes to driving.

The winter and snow may make for a spectacular episode of Planet Earth but it only makes driving that much more dangerous. Not even Sir David Attenborough’s GPS guidance could make driving in the winter a pleasant experience. The snow, slush, and ice involved in winter driving is anyone’s nightmare and it seems like it’s just an accident waiting to happen. But luckily there are things you can do to reduce your chances of being involved in an accident on the snow. Here are the dangers of winter driving and how you can reduce how dangerous they are to you.

Dangers of Winter Driving

Before the Drive

It’s important that you set yourself up for success before you get out and drive.

  • Ice – If you park your car outside overnight, you are going to wake up with ice covering your windows and mirrors. Use an ice scraper to remove the ice. (Tip: Scraping ice becomes much easier if you turn on the heat in your car for about 5 minutes.)
  • Fluids – You don’t want to drive without the proper fluids like antifreeze and fuel. Make sure to take your car in for maintenance before the frigid temperatures hit.

The Roads

Snow and ice on the roads are among the most dangerous driving conditions. Add in a blizzard and it may top that list.

  • Headlights – Turn on your headlights when driving in the winter, even if it’s not snowing. It will increase your car’s visibility which makes it safer for you and those with which you share the road.
  • Winter Tires – Your normal tires are not made to get any traction under winter conditions. Install your winter tires before the first snows of the season to make sure you are safe from day one.
  • Space – Even with winter tires, getting a good grip on the road may be tough–especially if you are driving before the snow plows are out. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you to make sure you remain in control of the vehicle
