Protect Your Home from Spring Weather

Protect Your Home From Spring WeatherSpring is upon us, do you know how to protect your home from the potential dangers of spring weather?

The Spring Equinox of the Northern Hemisphere will occur at 3:28 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017. Only three days away! Is your home ready for the spring weather? Spring marks a point in the earth’s rotation where a few things actually happen: the axis is pointing neither towards or away from the sun, the days for the northern hemisphere become longer, the weather becomes warmer, rainstorms occur, and plants begin to blossom. While we may welcome these changes, they come with a share of dangers. Here are a few tips on how to protect your home from spring weather.

  1. Weatherstripping
Weatherstrip all of your windows and doors. Weatherstripping can be found at your local hardware store and is fairly easy to apply. It ensures that water and warm air stay out, while keeping the cold air in.
  2. Check the gutters
Gutters funnel water away from your foundation. But throughout the year, the spouts can catch leaves, fur, feathers, and litter can become entrapped in the channel and create a dam. This can lead to an overspill, which can affect the foundation of your home.
  3. Inspect the roof
Your roof keeps you warm and dry during even the most severe of thunderstorms. It keeps you dry, that is, if it is working properly. Check your roof for curling, cracked, or missing shingles. And remember, a roof only lasts about 25 years, so if its life is coming to an end, consider replacing it.
