Trick-or-Treating Safety

Try out these suggestions to have a safe Halloween.Trick-or-Treating Safety

Halloween is right around the corner, and your children are bound to be excited. However, you can’t let excitement get in the way of your children’s safety. If you want your children to have a happy and safe Halloween, here are some of the safety precautions you should take.

Costume Safety

  • Make sure your child selects a costume that is made of non-flammable materials. This will reduce their fire risk in the event that they come in contact with decorations using real candles or open flames.
  • Avoid costumes that include face masks or other components that could obstruct your child’s vision. This will increase your child’s chances of tripping or running into something and injuring themselves.
  • When your child sets out for the night, make sure they are wearing enough layers to keep warm, and make sure they are sporting flat, comfortable shoes.

Trick-or-Treating Safety

  • Younger trick-or-treaters should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • Older children don’t necessarily need a parent chaperone, but they should be accompanied by a group of friends that you know and trust.
  • Have your child carry a phone. This way they can keep in touch, and you can track their location. Additionally, they can use it to call emergency services if necessary.
  • Review stranger danger rules with your kids. Remind them that they should never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.

Candy Safety

  • Ask your children not to eat any candy until you have a chance to inspect their haul.
  • When looking over your child’s candy, remove and discard any unwrapped, unlabeled, or unfamiliar treats.
  • Try to limit your child’s sugar intake—this will ensure that the night doesn’t end with a sugar crash and a stomachache.

These are some of the safety tips that you should try out this Halloween. Want another way to keep your loved ones safe this holiday?
