The Must-Use Used Car Checklist

The Must-Use Used Car ChecklistIf you are in the market for a “used” car, make sure to use these used car tips before you spend big.

Used cars are less expensive than brand new cars and that’s why many people choose to buy used cars. Still, expenses in the thousands to tens-of-thousands of dollars still hurt to make and you want to make sure that your investment will get you from point A to B as many times as possible. If you are in the market for a used car, make sure that you review the following before finalizing your purchase and drive home a lemon.

The Used Car Checklist

The Test Drive

You absolutely must test drive the car you are looking to purchase. If the seller won’t allow it, walk away: There’s a good chance there’s something very wrong with it. Drive the car on residential streets and on the highway. Get a feel for the car, and if anything doesn’t feel right, don’t buy it. You should buy a car that makes you feel comfortable.

The Leak Test

If there are fluids leaking from the car you wish to buy, it is a sign that something is not right. After the test drive, park the car and leave it there for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Reverse it a few feet and check to see if anything leaked. If there are fluids, ask the owner to fix these before you buy it.

The Under the Hood Test

Pop the hood and take a look. Even if you know nothing about cars, you should be able to spot a bad engine: rusty parts, a corroding battery, and leaky engine parts are all signs of a moribund engine.
